Chrome constantly crashing is probably an issue you have already dealt with. However, this is not the only thing that can go wrong with this popular web browser. Sometimes it can serve up an unresponsive black screen. Following are some things you can do to get rid of it.
Too many extensions running can be a problem, and can cause issues such as Chrome constantly crashing. If you get a black screen, turn all of them off, and then start enabling them one by one. You will know which one is causing the problem when the black screen appears again. When you do, remove the problematic extension.
Hardware Acceleration is used by default to improve Chrome’s performance although some GPUs cannot handle this. If that is your situation, then disabling the option is a good start. Go to Advanced in Settings and disable the Use hardware acceleration when available option.
People who have been using Chrome for a long time usually know of the settings available in Chrome://flags. Some of the flags need to be disabled, and then you can check if the problem has receded. For this, type Chrome://flags in the omnibar and hit Enter. Then, find and disable the following flags: Threaded compositing, GPU compositing on all pages, and Do SHOW Presents with GD.
Note that the second and third may not be available in all versions of Chrome. Disable the ones you find, close the browser, and launch it back up to see if the problem is still there.
Adobe Flash Player is an essential component in your PC, so if you do not have it yet, it is time to download it from the internet and install it. If you do have it and the version you are using is old, update it as soon as possible.
Resetting the browser can solve some issues, so try that. Run it again and see if it is working right. If not, the next thing to do is fully uninstall it and install it back up again.
Maybe the problem is that you are using an older version of the browser. A newer build will not give you the same trouble, so go online and download the latest version, then install it.
