People often come across the “Internet Explorer Not Responding” error while surfing the web on Windows PCs. Such error messages pop up when the browser becomes too slow and unresponsive to clicks and keystrokes. This can be annoying to your stock browsing experience on the computer. However, they can be resolved firstly by updating the out-of-date browser from Microsoft.

Windows updates often come with bug fixes for Internet Explorer, which may resolve the error that crashes the browser. If you have turned off automatic Windows Update on the system, download and install updates for Windows manually. For that, click the Start button on desktop, search for Windows Update and click on that. In the Control Panel menu, look for Windows Updates from Microsoft’s website only.

If you still see Internet Explorer Not Responding despite installing the latest update for the browser included, disable browser add-ons to retry clearing the error. Add-ons can enhance a browsing session on IE, but they tend to take time to load up fully on an open tab. Thus, it also affects webpage loading time, and may lead to the common error on Internet Explorer. You need not disable all of the add-ons to clear this, but only the add-ons you use rarely. For that, follow the below steps:

  • Launch Internet Explorer
  • Open Settings, denoted by a gear icon at the upper-right
  • Select Manage Add-Ons
  • In the list of add-ons that appears, right-click on the one you need to disable on Windows, and then select Disable.
  • Click Close and reboot Internet Explorer to see if this helps.

If not, you need to reset the stock browser of Windows to default settings with the below steps. Note that resetting Internet Explorer to factory default will remove the stored passwords, cookies, browsing history, temporary internet files and so forth; hence, resort to this troubleshoot only as a last resort.

  • Open the browser, click the gear icon and then choose Internet options.
  • Choose the Advanced option in the Settings menu
  • Click the Reset button
  • Put a checkmark next to the Delete Personal Settings checkbox
  • Click Reset again to confirm the same
